Marvin Gaye (1939-1984)
"I record so that I can feed people what they need, what they feel. Hopefully, I record so that I can help someone overcome a bad time." -Marvin Gaye
Often referred to as, "The Prince of Soul", Marvin Gaye was born on April 2nd in 1939 in Washington D.C. He started his relationship with music like many black artists of the early twentieth century, in church. His professional career debut consisted of him singing doo-wop before signing to Motown in 1961 where he started to ponder for his signature sound. Over the next 2 decades the artist would go on bouts of creation. Not limiting himself to being just a singer during the 1960s you could also see him drumming for other artists, and eventually producing his own music in the 70s. His creative juices came to a halt when his duet partner/ lover, Tami Terrell passed in 1970 from a brain tumor. As the 70's came so did turmoil surrounding The Civil Rights Movement along with the rise of The Black Panther Party, Mr. Gaye was inspired to create one of his most reveled albums and songs titled, "What's Going On" causing raves through the community. In the words of Tom Moon, "His album became an interconnected suite, a gallery of songs reflecting the state of the union as Gaye saw it, from neglected ghettos to the thriving community churches, to the abused environment. It wasn't jazz or pop. It wasn't protest music in the strictest sense. It wasn't pure gospel either, but it sure had that spirit. " Before his death by the hands of his father in 1984 Marvin Gaye went on to release his final studio album titled, "Midnight Love", winning him his 1st two Grammy's. Three years after his unfortunate death Marvin Gaye was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Mr. Gaye inspired many of the worlds biggest stars like Michael Jackson. Marvin Gaye is an icon because of the ability he had to make timeless and everlastingly relevant music, not only because of the political messages and outside the box approach but also because of his skillful producing skills that are still sampled to this day. He truly will be remembered forever.
